She thought he had taken advantage of her grandmother.
He thought she was prickly as a cactus.

"Let's get one thing straight, you're a glorified pool boy. I don't like you, and I certainly don't trust you. And 'Etta's Place'? If it's an attempt to butter me up, it won't work."
"Hey, it wasn't my idea," He held up both hands like he was innocent of all charges.
"I think you somehow bamboozled my grandmother into agreeing to this crazy scheme of yours, and now you think you can bamboozle me too. You come in her flashing that ridiculous smile of yours and pouring on the boyish charm. Well, let's get one thing straight, mister. I'm not my grandmother, and I can't be bamboozled."
He stepped back and gently set the folder on the coffee table. His voice was soft and oddly wistful. "At least we can agree on one thing. You're not your grandmother."

Etta Green's grandmother had entered into a business venture with her neighbor, Donny Joe Ledbetter. A venture she hadn't shared any knowledge of with Etta or her sister Belle. Donny Joe had thought to help the woman who was more like family to him than any of his true family had been and had agreed to finance the converting of Etta's grandmother's home into a B&B. Unfortunately Hazel died before she could see her plan come to fruition. Now Etta and Donny Joe are forced to work together to get the Bed & Breakfast Etta's grandmother had envisioned up and running. What neither could have expected after their initial abrasive confrontation was a crazy little thing called love making an appearance. Somehow I suspect that had always been part of Etta's grandmother's grand scheme.

Photobucket

This was such a fun and sweet romance. Etta Green is the Chef and part owner of an upscale Chicago restaurant called Finale that has earned a good reputation and was on its way to becoming one of the best. When she received word that her grandmother had died, she immediately leaves her partner and lead cooks in charge so she could help with the funeral arrangements and come to terms with the loss. She had planned to be gone for a week, two tops, but things didn't go as planned. First, she found out her grandmother had been in the midst of converting the estate into a B&B and things were a little wonky in regards to ownership. Secondly, she never expected her sister to up and leave her with her niece with nary a word of warning or idea of when she'd be back. That left Etta in a very uncomfortable position because things with her business partner, Diego, have been strained at best. The two had ended their long term romantic relationship six months prior and he'd protested her leaving, telling her she'd lose her job if when left. Ever since she'd been eager to get back and smooth things over with him. As she soon realizes, however, she may have been looking at her grandmother's plans in the wrong light. As the B&B construction starts taking shape, she sees it may not be the millstone she first thought, but rather a unique opportunity to get out from under the thumb of Diego and do her own thing. She's always seen her career going in one direction, now she may have to rethink.

Donny Joe Ledbetter had been a typical unruly teen who had gotten into some trouble. He'd grown up poor with no one to really look out for him and Miz Hazel, Etta's grandmother, had been the first person to give him a break at a time when he most needed it. Had she not done what she had for him, there's no doubt his life would have taken a turn for the worse. He'd never forgotten what she'd done and he and Miz Hazel, as she was known to all in town, had grown close over the years. She'd dole out advice and looked out for him and when she'd grown older, he'd returned the favor. Over the years he'd managed to do quite well for himself becoming the owner of a pool business. When Miz Hazel asked for his help in converting the family estate into a B&B he didn't hesitate to help and finance the venture. He'd have done just about anything for her, but putting up with her rude and abrasives granddaughter may be more than he can bear.

I loved how this couple started out disliking each other. It made the story all that much more fun. Donny Joe was a self decreed lifetime bachelor and had a well established reputation in Everson, Texas as being a scoundrel where woman were concerned. Etta thought she had him pegged, but as they start to get to know each other, they realize their initial thoughts of one another may have been made in haste. As they come to mutually respect and rely on each other they realize they get along very well.

Overall, I gave this one 3 1/2 out of 5 roses. A very sweet, lighthearted read that will put you in a good mood and make you feel all is right with the world. It was fun watching these two go from despising each other to loving each other. I enjoyed  how one individual got what they deserved and the idea that Etta's grandmother indirectly was the cause for these two coming together. On the Lisarenee Romance Rating Scale, this one received a FAN rating--the temperature in the room seems to have suddenly gone up a couple of degrees and a fan would be nice.

Release Day Review of The Taming of Ryder Cavanaugh (The Cynster Sisters Duo #2) by Stephanie Laurens

Notes: I received and eARC (eBook Advance Reader Copy) from the publisher.

Mary Cynster knew exactly the type of man she wanted to marry--one she could control to a degree and not be controlled by. She highly regards her independence and wishes to find a husband who won't control her, and will allow her to act as she chooses and not need to ask permission of in order to do so. She has her eye set on Rand Cavanaugh and all she needs is the Cynster family necklace to confirm what she feels she already knows--that Rand Cavanaugh is her perfect match.

Ryder Cavanaugh, Marquess of Raventhorne, has other ideas in that regard.  Considered to be quite a catch and highly regarded by the ton, he has just set his sights on Mary Cynster. His main flaw, in Mary's eyes, is he is one of the most unmanageable men of the ton. Smart, handsome, and debonair he exudes power without ever giving it a thought. Mary is the last female of marriageable age in the powerful Cynster family. It would be years, perhaps a decade or more, before one of her cousin's daughters would enter the marriage mart. Coming from an powerful, old, and tight knit family with strong connections makes Mary's a highly sought after hand indeed. Aligning oneself with a  family such as the Cynsters would be considered advantageous by any and all. Cynster woman, however,  are known to only marry for love. Ryder's decided he'll just have to find some means to get around that.

One thing is for sure, Mary's days as an eligible bachelorette are numbered.

Photobucket

This book was such a fun read that it left me with a grin reminiscent of the one Mary is wearing on the cover. Mary is a smart, bossy, independent woman who will no doubt set the ton on its ear and one day be a force to be reckoned with. You rarely see such a quality in the young women written of in historical romances and I found it rather refreshing. She's the type of woman who sees and obstacle and immediately sets about finding a way to remove it from her path. If confronted with a less than desirable situation she sets about how to make the best of it. Even at such a young age she can ruffle the feathers of her peers with her bold and brash ways. Intimidating men like Rand Cavanaugh who haven't the faintest how to handle such a she--a woman ahead of her time.

Ryder Cavanaugh, however, knows exactly what to do with such a woman and is determined not to stop until she's his. In his eyes she might as well surrender because all has already been determined. His brother is not for her, he is. He's her equal on every level and just as determined as she, perhaps more so. When she confronts him as to why he's following her--why he's being found in places he just shouldn't be, he redirects her musings never directly answering her question thereby letting her draw her own conclusions. He's got a plan and part of that is to let her warm up to the idea of the two of them as a couple and show her how no other will do. Mary's appeal to him isn't just about the family connections she could bring, but rather her understanding of the workings of a close knit family, something he and his siblings have never had. It's something he's always longed for and with Mary's help, he hopes to emulate within his own family. As they say, the best laid plans can often go awry and when Ryder and Mary are caught in a rather compromising situation, the two are forced to become engaged. Some would say Cavanaugh is one lucky individual, but the events which lead to their betrothal had nothing to do with luck. Someone had tried to kill him and if Mary hadn't noticed him and been as fast acting and cool under pressure as she was, he would be dead. Now the question remains who tried to kill Ryder and will they try again?

Overall, I gave this one 4 1/2 out of 5 roses. I deduced early on who was attempting to murder Ryder, so I wasn't surprised by the outcome. I adored the chemistry displayed between Ryder and Mary. The dance these two did circling each other was highly entertaining and a delight to watch. I adored Mary and her determination to have her way. I loved the way Ryder, despite his equally domineering personality, wouldn't change her for anything, and allowed her to have the freedom to be herself. I loved how he didn't see her intelligence and straightforwardness as shortcomings but rather as her strengths. I loved that for once we got to see a strong woman of the ton begin to come into her own. A very enjoyable read that I HIGHLY recommend. On the Lisarenee Romance rating scale this one gets a STEAM rating---too hot for a fan, but you still have a handle on things. You should use extreme caution when reading a book with this rating in public. People may inquire as to why you looked flustered and flushed.

Early Review of A Kiss of Blood (Vamp City, #2) by Pamela Palmer

  • Title: A Kiss of Blood: A Vamp City Novel
  • Classification: Adult Fiction
  • Genre: Urban Fantasy
  • Mass Market Paperback; 384 pages
  • Publisher: Avon (June 25, 2013)
  • ISBN-10: 0062107534
  • ISBN-13: 978-0062107534
  • Notes: I received an eARC (eBook Advanced Reader Copy) from the publisher. Contained a vampire orgy and many violent scenes.

It all started a mere month ago. Quinn Lennox and her brother, Zack, were searching for her brother's best friend, Lily, who went missing. Suddenly, they stumbled into another world. A world that existed in another dimension, right on top of the modern day Washington DC. A dimension where time had stood still for 140 years. A dimension populated and ruled by vampires and other creatures of legend. A deadly and dark world where vampires were the real deal and they'd sooner eat you then let you live.

Some of the vampires in V.C. feed off more than just blood, they feed off emotions. Some feed off fear, some pain, while others on pleasure. Humans are considered slaves in V.C. and are treated as the title would imply. The main law of the land is that vampires rule and humans have no rights. They are considered property, playthings, and mobile meals. Vampires are stronger, quicker, and can travel great distances in the blink of an eye making escape virtually impossible. It's a place where anything goes and rules are few and far between. A place where the magic which created it is slowly starting to fail, condemning to death those who resided within the city's confines at the exact moment the spell which created it started to break.

If Quinn had her way, she and her brother would never go back to the city dubbed Washington VC and that world would die. As Arturo, the handsome yet untrustable vampire who helped Quinn and Zack escape the city had warned would happen, when Zack left the DC area, he grew extremely ill. Now it looks like Quinn and her brother will have to go back to Vamp City and try to renew the spell that keeps VC going. It may be her brother's only hope of surviving. The only problem is, no one knows why Quinn's magic is bound within her keeping her from reaching her full potential as a sorceress. She needs to find a way to let her powers loose or her brother and all who are bound to Vamp City will die and time is of the essence. With every day that passes it becomes increasingly clear that the city's magic is beginning to crumble as fissures between the real and magical realms become more frequent and unpredictable.

Photobucket

This is the second book of the Vamp City series. Once again Quinn is thrown into the dark and sinister world of Vamp City. She and Arturo search for the reason her powers are bound so she can save the city. Utilizing the talents and help of Arturo's friends they begin their quest for answers. Being in Vamp City, Quinn is once more vulnerable to the supernatural beings that dwell within. She'll need to trust and rely on Arturo more than ever to survive. I loved that along the way Quinn grew as a character and gained confidence in herself as well as valuable insight and knowledge about the supernatural world. She'll come partially into her powers and start to become a force to be reckoned with and I absolutely loved seeing this transition.

I was absolutely seduced by Palmer's last Vamp City novel, 'A Blood Seduction', and part of that seduction had to do with the Vampire name Arturo. I was slightly disappointed that the vamp whom I found myself both liking and despising in equal measures lost a bit of his bad boy edge in this novel. His character seemed to do a complete turnaround and I almost didn't recognize him as the seductively dangerous vampire we first met. I had really liked the idea of a dark and dangerous hero who skirted the edge of propriety while flirting with the taboos of society. I had enjoyed how Quinn found him irresistible yet despicable causing her to be conflicted about her feelings because while she felt herself incredibly pulled to him she knew he wasn't good for her and couldn't be trusted. I was looking forward to seeing these two explore their feelings for each while breaking the barriers of what they initially believed about one another. I guess that scenario was never meant to be. While I enjoyed the jealousy Arturo displayed, I had hope that the emotional tug of war Quinn was experiencing in regards to Arturo in the first book would continue on in its intensity for a little while longer.

Overall, I gave this one 4 out of 5 roses. I really enjoy the world Ms. Palmer created and really love the characters. The world was just as dark and perverse as the last book, but whereas it was an utter and total book seduction with 'A Blood Seduction', I felt like the whip cream, nuts, and cherry were missing on my sundae which would have pushed this book over the top and raised it from a 4 to a 5 on my rating scale. Still it was a fun read that I wouldn't have wanted to miss and I look forward to reading the next book in the series. On the Lisarenee Romance Rating Scale, this one get a SHOWER rating--a cold shower is necessary (need I say more?). Some books should come with a warning - make sure your significant other is handy or your shower is in working order. lol

Heart of Obsidian (Psy-Changeling, #12) by Nalini Singh

Notes: I bought this one.

For seven long years he waited, carefully plotting out his course. He gained power and prestige in order to gain the information he needed, and anyone standing in his way would not stand for long. When the opportunity arose, he grabbed it and finally was able to fulfill the promise he made to her. The promise that he'd come for her and find her. All she had to do was stay alive. And she did. Now vengeance and fury will be his because nobody takes what is his. And make no mistake, she is his. There is absolutely nothing he wouldn't do for her and when he's finished, the Psy-Changeling world will never be the same.

Photobucket

This is the 12th book of the Psy-Changeling series and unlike many of the series that go on this long, Nalini Singh hasn't lost her touch. These books are interwoven together and build upon each other and each is unique unto itself. I would recommend reading all of them in order to get the full enjoyment from the story she creates.

Kaleb Krychek has been a man of mystery until now. Under the tutelage of a madman since the age of five, he's somehow managed to survive, although not totally unscathed. He has both a dark and a light side to his nature and if his dark side were ever to take control, no one would be safe. His psychic abilities are so powerful he could destroy the world if he wanted. He is a dual cardinal, the only one in existence. We know from the previous books that he was Santano Enrique's protégé,  but we didn't know how involved, if at all, he was in the the madman's murderous schemes. In 'Heart of Obsidian', that question will finally be answered as will many others.

Seven years ago Enrique thought to mold Kaleb into his own image. That didn't happen. What resulted was Sahara Kyriakus of the NightStar clan being kidnapped and Kaleb has spent the last seven years of his life searching for her. Now he has her and those involved will pay dearly for their mistake.

When Sahara Kyriakus was first kidnapped, she created a complicated labyrinth of her mind to keep  those who would use her from doing so. For seven long years she's been disconnected from the PsyNet retreating within her own mind. She's been tortured and caged, but the labyrinth  kept her from having to deal with the pain and horror of her ordeal. Her captors had hoped to one day utilize her unique ability, but could not find a way through the labyrinth no matter how hard they tried. At the time of her abduction, she'd been only 16 years old. When Kaleb finds the now 23 years old Sahara, she doesn't know him, doesn't remember much of her past, and is only a shadow of the person she once was. Chunks of time from her incarceration are missing, and the only thing she seems to know is that an inner voice keeps telling her that she can trust Kaleb. With him she feels safe. While many would tell her otherwise, she knows Kaleb would never hurt her. With his help, she'll find her way back out of the labyrinth. Back to the people she loves.  Back to the man who would give his life for hers, and we'll learn the story of why she is so dear to Kaleb.

Besides going after those who kidnapped Sahara, Kaleb is also attempting to stop Pure Psy from taking over leadership of the Psy world. Pure Psy believes the Psy race is superior to all others and should not be tainted by mixing their DNA with that of the other races. If it had its way, the Psy would rule the world. In 'Tangle of Need', the Psy Council was dismantled. The question of who will take control is up for grabs. Pure Psy is throwing its hat into the ring through a series of violent strikes against those who oppose their beliefs and innocent people are getting caught in the crossfire. As Kaleb and his team of loyal Arrows attempt to find those responsible for the ensuing massacres, the Arrows' and Kaleb's high visibility help in rescuing victims is setting Kaleb up as a prime candidate to take over leadership in many a Psy's eye. One way or another a new leadership will rise out of the ashes. The question is will it be the right one? If Kaleb has his way, Silence will be no more.

I gave this one 5 out of 5 roses. Ms. Singh has created a truly unique and wonderful paranormal world which she breathes life into with every stroke of her pen. An action-packed suspenseful adventure of a read filled with drama, emotions, and an earth shattering romance to boot. If you enjoy the Psy-Changeling series this is a must read. This is one series I would love to see turned into a TV series. It would be phenomenal. On the Lisarenee Romance Rating Scale, this one scores a STEAM rating--too hot for a fan, but you still have a handle on things. You should use extreme caution when reading a book with this rating in public. People may inquire as to why you looked flustered and flushed. I HIGHLY recommend this series.
