One second Laurel Hodges (aka Vivian Stewart) was starting to feel secure in her home of two years, and the next, everything changed. News had spread faster than a wildfire through the small, out of the way town of Pineview, Montana of the murder of one of their own. Pat Stueben, a local realtor, had been found murdered in a rental cabin. The second she heard the news Laurel feared the past had finally caught up with her. For four years, she and her children had been in hiding. They had spent the first two years in WitSec, the witness protection program. Two years ago, a breach in the program led to the death of the Federal agent hired to protect her. That was when Laurel, her brother, and Rex left the program going their separate ways to try their luck on their own, knowing WitSec could no longer guarantee their safety. She'd put her life on hold for four years, and she was tired of running....

This is the first book I've read of Novak's, but it won't be the last. I didn't have to get to far into the story before I knew I'd be buying plenty of her books. I loved the way Laurel had tried to distance herself from her sexy neighbor, Myles, the local sheriff.  I loved the feelings of want and desire displayed yet denied by each. I loved the moment which led up to the couple finally giving into those desires and the moment they realized their feelings ran deeper than either would first admit. It was one of the best love build ups (for lack of a better term) I've read. *sigh* I just love good romance. While this has romance, it is not the only element that I loved in the story. The drama created by the members of the gang who have come looking for Laurel had me hooked from the start, and the bad guys sent shivers running up and down my spine.

I didn't read the first book in this series, but I didn't feel lost. Enough background information was given that I could get right into the story. So if you're looking for a suspenseful romance you may just want to pick this one up. I gave this one 4 out of 5 roses.

Is the quiet boy with good manners another victim of the true murderer, or did he truly commit the heinous murders? He was cleared of a similar murder that took place months before. In that case, three boys testified they'd seen him leave the murder victim's house around the time of the crime. Problem was he had a solid alibi, and his name was cleared. Jamie O'Neill was the boy's former therapist and is convinced the boy is innocent. He persuades Sam Hall to represent Malachai. Sam is high powered attorney with a reputation for winning cases thought to be impossible to win. Jamie also persuades his niece, Jenna, a member of the Krewe of Hunters - a paranormal FBI team, to investigate the crime. With a little help from Jenna's friends, the group will attempt to get to the bottom of what really happened.

I think this is the perfect read for the Halloween season. Set in Salem, Massachusetts during the middle of Halloween season it reminded me of telling ghost stories at sleepovers as a child, but better. With ghosts from the Salem Witch hunt era making appearances and flash backs from past murders, you get a good murder mystery with a little bit of the history of Salem mixed in. Also, there is a dash of romance included as things heat up between Jenna and Sam. Plus, as an added bonus, Graham included some recipes at the end with ties to the area. I love it when an author does this. I wish more did. I gave this one 4 out of 5 roses. Miranda Sullivan really likes Will Jefferson, but he's got a thing for Miranda's best friend, Shirley, who has a thing for Larry Knight. I wonder if Will will ever see that Miranda is the perfect person for him?

Gloria Ashton is pregnant and hasn't told the soon to be father yet. What is she waiting for?

Those are just some of the things going on in Cedar Cove, but don't let me talk your ear off with the local gossip. Take a stroll in Cedar Cove and get a feel for what's going on. You'll be glad you did.  

Reading this book reminded me of how my mom described the small town she grew up in. Where everyone knew everyone else and where the 6 degrees of separation theory was whittled down to closer to 1 or 2 degrees. Where everyone pretty much knew everyone else's business. Yet even though a small town may sound like heaven on earth to some, nirvana can not always be found there. Every day life has a way of sneaking up on someone even in a small town, and the dramas of daily life can not be escaped. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting some of the residents of Cedar Cove. It reminded me of a less naughty version of Desperate Housewives. I truly enjoyed it.

For those of you who are fans of the series, the next book, 1225 Christmas Tree Lane, will be Macomber's last book in this series. *sniff* This series was recommended to me by several people. This is the first book in the series that I've read. I really appreciated that Debbie listed the characters at the front of the book and how they are related. It made it easy to just slip in to one of the later books of the series and not feel lost. I definitely see how loosing this series will sadden many of Ms. Macomber's fans. It'll be like losing part of the family. I gave this book 4 out of 5 roses.
